Inside Victorville

What a difference two years makes…

September 17th, 2008, 11:29 am · 3 Comments · posted by bedwards

In 2006, the biggest city in the Victor Valley had no election, as Mayor Terry Caldwell and Councilwoman JoAnn Almond ran unopposed for re-election to Victorville’s City Council. Fast forward to 2008, and five candidates (down from an original six) are challenging incumbents Rudy Cabriales, Bob Hunter and Mike Rothschild.

Part of this dramatic shift in competition for council seats may come from a nationwide spike in civic involvement, as the country faces an election that will cap off two years of campaigning and the history-making run of a female and black male for president. Reporter Ryan Orr will be taking an in-depth look at the excitement that’s surrounded the presidential race, and how it’s affected local involvement, in a story included in the Daily Press’ upcoming, special election issue.

Discontent with the current economy is also likely a contributing factor, as people search for ways to help those who are struggling.

Others have suggested to me that the increase in candidates comes from a general discontent with the direction the City of Victorville has taken in recent months, losing sight of what the citizens care about.

Why do you feel the number of challengers went from zero to five in two years flat?

Does the current economy mean it’s time for change, or is it a dangerous time to shift control?

Definitely a time for change of council members. Let’s start at the top and the ones who have been there forever and still have not brought about positive change for this city. When council women can use their power of position to get what they want because of personal vendettas and use city officials to get it . When the people of Victorville witness over and over again the misuse of funds by the Council to get what they want and not for the good of the residents. Then I say it’s time to look at the ballot and vote them all out and start over.

Can someone explain why am I getting junk calls from Bill Abernathy to support Rudy Cabriales on my cell phone when I don’t live in Victorville and I do not have a Victorville Area code?

Don’t they have something better to do with tax dollars than sending out massive junk calls to people and waisting the cell phone minutes of someone who doesn’t live in their area? Which is a good thing because if I did I still would not vote for either of them simply because of all the anoying automated calls…

Complacency and misdirected priorities have allowed the city to squander tnes of millions of dollars with special interests and special projects-

Time to vote the incuments out -
